Is Marriott WiFi safe?

Marriott ties free in-room internet to Marriott Bonvoy. Here is what the program terms say, and how to use the network safely.

Short answer

Marriott WiFi is a normal shared hotel network: fine for browsing and most apps over HTTPS. Join the network name the property gives you at check-in, sign in through the hotel’s portal (often with your Bonvoy details), and check the network before banking.

Marriott’s terms don’t publish a single network name for all hotels — names differ by property. Use the name the front desk gives you, not the strongest “Marriott” network in the list.

Using it safely

  1. Ask reception for the exact network name for your property.
  2. Sign in on the portal; it may ask for your room number, last name or Bonvoy login. It should never ask for your card number to use the included internet.
  3. Run a check after signing in: login page completed, DNS answers normal, certificates valid.
  4. Use HTTPS and your VPN for work; prefer apps for banking.
  5. Forget the network at check-out.
