Is Heathrow Airport WiFi safe?

What the London Heathrow Airport WiFi is called, what its sign-in page asks for, and how to check it before you trust it.

Short answer

Heathrow’s own network, “Heathrow Wi‑Fi”, is a reasonable choice for browsing: it is free, needs a short registration and filters unsuitable content. A content filter is not encryption, though. Use HTTPS sites, keep sensitive logins for a network you’ve checked, and be wary of any other “free” Heathrow-sounding network.

What the sign-in page should ask for

Heathrow asks you to register on the sign-in page. Registration is normal here, but use details you are happy to share and never reuse a password from another account.

Rule of thumb for any airport: a WiFi sign-in page may ask you to accept terms, watch an ad or enter basic contact details. It should never ask for a card number, your email password or a bank login.

Lookalike networks

Heathrow publishes one name: Heathrow Wi‑Fi. Lookalikes such as Heathrow Free WiFi, LHR WiFi or a terminal-numbered variant are not on the official page.

Copycat networks (“evil twins”) work by broadcasting a name that looks trusted, sometimes with a stronger signal than the real one. CISA advises confirming the name of a public hotspot before you use it, so if two similar names appear, ask staff or check the airport’s website.

A 5-step check at Heathrow

  1. Join exactly Heathrow Wi‑Fi — not a similar name, and not one that appeared after you arrived at the gate.
  2. Complete the sign-in page and look at its address: the airport or its WiFi provider, ideally over HTTPS.
  3. Use apps and sites over HTTPS. If a site you know suddenly shows a certificate warning, stop.
  4. Keep banking and work logins for a network you have checked, or use mobile data or your company VPN.
  5. Turn off Auto-Join for this network before you leave, so your phone doesn’t silently rejoin a lookalike later.
