What the sign-in page should ask for

The Library says you don’t need a login, password or Library card, only to accept the terms of use. Any “State Library” page asking for a password or card number is a red flag.

Rule of thumb for any public WiFi: a sign-in page may ask you to accept terms, register an email or watch an ad. It should never ask for a card number for free access, your email password or a bank login.

Lookalike networks

The Library publishes State Library of NSW. SLNSW Free, Library WiFi or NSW Library Guest are not the published name.

Copycat networks (“evil twins”) broadcast a trusted-looking name, sometimes with a stronger signal than the real one. CISA advises confirming the name of a public hotspot before you use it.

A 5-step check at State Library of NSW

  1. Join exactly State Library of NSW, not a similar name.
  2. Complete the sign-in page and look at its address before typing anything.
  3. Use apps and sites over HTTPS. If a site you know suddenly shows a certificate warning, stop.
  4. Keep banking and work logins for a network you have checked, or use mobile data.
  5. Turn off Auto-Join for this network when you leave, so your phone doesn’t silently rejoin a lookalike later.
