Is State Library Victoria WiFi safe?
Free high-speed WiFi in all public areas of State Library Victoria, with one unusual rule: VPNs are prohibited.
Fine for research and browsing. Two things to know: the Library says VPNs are prohibited on its wireless network, and it provides web browsing only. Without a VPN, rely on HTTPS, and keep banking for mobile data or a network you have checked.

What the sign-in page should ask for
The Library says to select the network and open your browser. Its sign-in should only ask you to accept its terms. A page asking for a card number or another account’s password does not match.
Rule of thumb for any public WiFi: a sign-in page may ask you to accept terms, register an email or watch an ad. It should never ask for a card number for free access, your email password or a bank login.
Lookalike networks
The Library’s own pages write the name two ways (State Library Victoria and State Library of Victoria). If you see both at once, or another library-sounding name, ask at the information desk which is real.
Copycat networks (“evil twins”) broadcast a trusted-looking name, sometimes with a stronger signal than the real one. CISA advises confirming the name of a public hotspot before you use it.
A 5-step check at State Library Victoria
- Join exactly
State Library Victoria, not a similar name. - Complete the sign-in page and look at its address before typing anything.
- Use apps and sites over HTTPS. If a site you know suddenly shows a certificate warning, stop.
- Keep banking and work logins for a network you have checked, or use mobile data.
- Turn off Auto-Join for this network when you leave, so your phone doesn’t silently rejoin a lookalike later.
